A Brief History Of The Florida Sportsmen's Association
The Florida Sportsmen's Association is a Heartland based group which dates back to 1968. Although it is a relatively small organization it has a large outreach in the community. Members are dedicated to humanity and do not mind giving of themselves in order to change some of the negative concepts prevalent in our society. We are dedicated to sponsoring a wide range of activities to place emphasis on the motivation and development of young people into the responsible and successful achievements which will foster mutual respect and acceptance of minority communities. In the beginning, the Florida Sportsmen's Association was organized at a time when black golfers were being denied the opportunity to play golf due to lack of acceptance at most clubs. They applied for and were given the right to play in the Highlands County Open Golf Championship Tournament. The group felt it was important to establish their own club and the Florida Sportsmen's Association was developed. They discovered that black golfers around the state were being denied competition in tournament play. The Association's name reflects the desire to encompass all sports in which black adults participate. In 1970 the Association sponsored its first 36 hole tournament which included Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Willie Stargell, Harold McRae, Bobby Bonds, Gary Maddox, Jim Wynn and Doc Ellis! Having these celebrity players in the area was a great treat for the little leaguer's. Though the group has changed its posture in the last decade, it still focuses on sports, including Golf. But it has adopted a goal of bringing minority and non-minority communities together socially and to sponsor charities so desperately needed by the underprivileged in our neighborhoods.
Funds for the charitable work we do are raised through the golf tournament, but also through donations from the community.
